As leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he launched the groundbreaking Ostpolitik, aimed at normalizing relations with Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. In 1971, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his courageous efforts to bridge the East-West divide during the Cold War. His silent kneeling at the Warsaw Ghetto memorial remains one of the most powerful gestures of modern history.
