In Memoriam

We remember Glenn Gould for turning silence into music and music into thought. His art still teaches us how to listen to the soul.

43rd anniversary

Death notice

The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline, but rather the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.

Funere honors Glenn Gould, Canadian pianist and intellectual, who passed away on October 4, 1982, in Toronto. Born on September 25, 1932, Gould remains one of the greatest interpreters of Johann Sebastian Bach and among the most distinctive musicians of the 20th century. Renowned for his extraordinary talent and eccentric personality, he gained international fame with his recordings of the Goldberg Variations, which redefined the art of piano performance. In 1964, he famously withdrew from live concerts to focus entirely on studio recording, pioneering a new approach to musical creation. Gould viewed music as a deeply personal and spiritual experience. His legacy endures through his interpretations, essays, and the profound serenity he brought to the art of listening.
